Are the Celtics really missing Rondo?

Hey folks, it's really been a long time since I updated this blog and I have to say I wish I could have more time like I used to but now I'm living outside Spain for a short period of time and I have tons of work to do.
Nevertheless, I always have time to watch Celtics games and talk about the best team in the world in my Twitter account (y'all can follow): twitter.com/allboutceltics

So, let's get into business. When I wrote my last post "Avery Bradley is back" the Celtics were desperately in need of help as their record was 14-16 and when Bradley came back, Celtics won 6 straight games that put them in within a 20-17 record. But unexpectedly the Celtics lost again 6 straight games and lost Rondo for the rest of the season.
The Celtics were looking lost after that devastating news about losing their superstar point guard. But something flourished from the Celtics players hearts which we can surely call it "Celtic Pride". Since that first night without Rondo (that the C's played against Miami and won), the Celtics are 14-4 with a record of 34-27 and trying to get as high as possible in the standings. In addition, Doc's team has also lost Sullinger and Barbosa for the rest of the season (Leandro was traded though). So we really need to give credit to these group of guys for what they been doing lately. But what have been the main "ingredients" for success without Rondo? Let's have a look at it:

Green has been really agressive on both sides of the court
- The resurgence of Jeff Green as the sixth man of the Celtics. Green has averaged 14,6 pts, 4 rb, 2,1 ast & 1,5 blk in 31,2 minutes in the absence of Rondo and has step up making him worth his big contract. He's often in NBA.com highlights and his type of game allows him to control every aspect of the game which makes him a ferocious defender and a good offensive player. Now he's not that inconsistent player he used to be because his new role has helped him to feel confident and uncover his potential. He also has given us the Celtics fans some hope for the future.

- Others Celtics players production has improved such as Bradley, who has showed his best offensive game and his tireless defense, Terry, who's been defending and hitting nice 3pts, Lee, who's given athleticism to the lineup and of course Pierce and KG who have been magnificent by putting the team on their backs and shutting down criticism from the media.

- The additions of Jordan Crawford & Terrence Williams have also helped. Jordan was known for having a "crazy" head and bad defense but he's been adjusting well so far to Doc's system and he's playing pretty good defense too. We haven't seen much of Terrence Williams because of his lack of minutes but we saw a nice stat line against the suns when he put up 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in  which he played the point guard really well. Thanks to that, Danny has signed him for two years
The Celtics have also signed 2 bigs from the China association, the former bobcat DJ White and the former Wizard Shavlik Randolph. So let's see how they contribute too.

- Team Chemistry has been really important in this big run too. Players like Lee and Terry admitted that losing an all-star caliber player was really bad (see Rose's case) but that they would stay united no matter what happened. Here is when you can really believe in that sentence which says: "WE, not ME"

So, concerning the question, are the Celtics missing Rondo? My answer is yes, but not quite as a player but as the leader figure of this team. But, will we miss him in the Playoffs? Maybe, but don't forget guys: #WeBelieve.

Avery Bradley is BACK

Bradley playing hard defense on Hayward
And finally the day is here! The most awaited moment of the season knocks the door as Bradley will be playing his first game against the Grizzlies after having recovered from a shoulder injury that kept him away from playing last year's Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat.
Bradley is really excited to be back and hasn't felt any kind of pressure (Via Boston.com): "I'm excited, the team is excited, I'm sure the fans are excited. I'm just going to go there and play Celtics basketball".

It's hard to say but the Celtics really need the kid desperately as they are with a 14-16 record and have lost 6 of their last 8 games. It's been hard a hard time lately and they have lost a lot of their confidence as the new acquisitions are not working as good as expected (we mainly refer to Lee, Barbosa and Green, even though Jeff has played better so far). Thus, trade rumors have emerged and there have been some rumors involving interior players like Gortat, Varejao and Cousins. The most important one have been the Cousins one, as it's still alive but the Kings have recently said that Cousins is not going anywhere. So I guess everything falls on Bradley and we all hope he can be as good as last year to bring his defensive intensity.
So no excuses after Bradley's return, if it doesn't work, the best thing may be an Ainge adjustement by trading some value pieces such as Bass, Lee or even Bradley or Sully, and why not Melo.

Leaving Bradley's issue aside, tonight we face the Grizzlies and it's probable that Rondo won't be playing so the Celtics may start Lee or Terry at the PG and Bradley at the SG or may leave Bradley on the bench and start Terry and Lee. The Grizzlies are going to be a hard team to beat as they are playing one of their best seasons so far but will Bradley factor help us win this one? Can't wait to see him on the floor!

UPDATE: Rondo & Bradley will start tonight against the Grizzlies

Bradley defendiendo duro a Hayward

Celtics are desperately in need of Bradley

After having watched the Celtics last games we have had the opportunity to see that our defense is starting to improve (having allowed just 92 points per 100 possessions over the last 5 games) but there's still a lack of a key element in this team in order to success: the defensive specialist. I want you to watch this video I'm about to show you and I'm sure you'll see how necessary is this player for our team right now:

Good memories right? And yes, I'm talking about Bradley, who was considered one of the top one-on-one defenders in the league last year. In this game, despite stats don't say much (11 points, 2 assists and 2 steals in 23 minutes) it can be seen how important was Bradley to get that game's win with his tireless pressure on his matchups. Not only he did it in this game but he did it the whole year until he was injured in the playoffs.
As Boston.com informed 5 days ago: "Bradley is getting close to returning" and these couldn't be better news for us. I can't imagine how much is going to help to have Bradley on the roster again doing his amazing defense and netting those corner threes he used to shoot. The only problem with his addition will be the minutes conflict with the other SG. I'm guessing Lee is going to be the most damnified here as he's not played very good basketball so far.
I'm really sure he will be our season-changer and we will be the team to beat after the All-Star Break. What do you think?

And yeah, why not finishing this post with the capture of the best Bradley defensive play of last year? (I know you all were waiting for this).

[Spanish Version]

No creéis?

Wolves @ Celtics Preview - December 5, 2012

Minnesota Timberwolves (8-8) @ Celtics (9-8)
Wednesday, December 5, 2012
7:30 pm ET / 1.30 Peninsula time
TD Garden

Rondo is back with the team after a 2 games suspension hoping to provide a "extra" spark. Of these 2 games, the Celtics won the first one against the Blazers and the other one was a painful 3-point loss against the Bucks. Coming back home, the Celtics will try to win this one against a Wolves team that's not in their best plus they have important players injured such as Kirilenko, Rubio and Budinger.
Let's see then the probable starters:
Probable starters

Boston Celtics

Lineup: PG - Rondo / SG - Terry / SF - Pierce / PF - Bass / C - KG

Reserves: Jason Terry, Jeff Green, Leandro Barbosa, Jared Sullinger, Jason Collins, Kris Joseph,
InjuriesAvery Bradley (shoulder)

Minnesota Timberwolves

Lineup: PG - Ridnour / SG - Lee / SF - Howard / PF - Love / C - Pekovic

Reserves: Alexei Shved, Juan Barea, Greg Stiemsma, Dante Cunningham, Derrick Williams, Louis Admunson
Injuries: Brandon Roy (knees), Andrei Kirilenko (Back spasms), Chase Budinger (knee), Ricky Rubio (knee)

Key matchup of the game
Bass vs Love
Bass will have to do a huge effort in order to stop one of the best (if not the best) power forwards in the league. Love can do almost everything in the game: shoot, rebound, play the post and even can pass the ball. So Bass's defense on Love has to be they key of success in this game, because without Love, they are totally a different team.
Keys to the game

- The first and most important priority of this game is to rebound the ball hard. As Rivers told the media about Love and the Wolves (BostonHerald.com): "They are not a good rebounding team; they are an amazing rebounding team. Kevin Love is one of the best rebounders of the era.", the Wolves are a skilled rebounding team as they have Love and Pekovic and bench players such as Amundson or Derrick Williams. So we must close our zone and keep these players away from it. And of course, try to catch as many offensive rebounds as we can.

- As always, we have to improve our bench scoring but we've been doing it better lately so it's a matter of being more regular. Green, Lee and Sullinger are starting to adjust their game to the schemes but we also need Barbosa to be there and contribute regularly.

- And finally, we must try to commit the fewest number of turnovers as we can because this is going to give second opportunities to the rival and the Wolves could use it to go on fast-break or shoot threes (they are a good 3 point shooting team).

So it's all for today folks. Remember to follow us on Twitter to follow the game with us: twitter.com/allbouceltics

The Fab Melo issue

Throghout this week I've been thinking about our last draft and the picks we got on it. After almost a quarter of the season played, what I can see is that Sullinger has achieved the expectations but what about our 22th election Fab Melo? He's playing with the Maine Red Claws in the D-League and he's averaging no more than 8 points and less than 3 rebound plus +3 fouls a game.

I know it's early, I know we already knew he was raw when we picked him up and that he's only been playing for 5 years. But what if we hadn't chosen him in the draft? There were some other talents right after him such as Festus Ezeli (3,5p & 4,5 reb) or Bernard James (4,2p & 3,8 reb) that are currently playing around 15-20 solid minutes with their respective teams and would have worked good for us.

I remember when Doc Rivers said Fab was going to dominate the D-League as Greg Stiemsma did: “I think he’ll be very good in the D-League, because there’s not a lot of bigs, so I’m expecting him to almost be dominant,” said Rivers."But he's not specially good doing that as he's quite struggling with his game. The other day against Fort Wayne, Melo collected 14 points but 12 of them were dunks, and also grabbed only 4 rebounds in 18 minutes [VIDEO]:

But he's not specially good doing So after watching the video, what do you think about the situation? Will you give him a couple of years to develop to be a defensive role player or will you waive him after this present season just as we did with JaJuan Johnson? In my opinion, the kid's got defensive skills and knows how to block shots (he was named defensive player of the season in his second year with Syracuse) but is it worthy to keep him as he doesn't have any kind of offensive game? I think that time will tell and we should wait around two years to see if he improves a little bit and then if he doesn't, we should give an opportunity to other young players.

Game recap: The Celtics looked lost against the Nets in a brawl-game

Rondo lost his jersey in the fight against Humphries
"Ugly" could be the perfect word to define yesterday's game against the Nets. The rival started very strong doing a big job on the boards and their numerous offensive rebounds created tension between players. Specifically, Humphries is one of these guys that always likes to be there for the rebound and fight for it. So after a play he couldn't grab a rebound, he had a first contact with KG under the rim. Later, KG was attacking the basket and he did a turnaround jumper when suddenly Humphries sent him to the floor. Here it's when Rondo as a "protective" brother, pushed Humphries and several players from both teams got involved. Hence, Rondo, Humphries and Wallace got ejected due to that dirty fight.
Right after the game, Doc Rivers told the media that Rondo controlled himself by not going after the referees and he thought he behaved better this time but still thought it wasn't a good action (Yahoo) ''Usually he goes after the refs,'' Rivers said. ''This was another guy, so this was better.''

For those who missed the brawl here you have the video on Youtube:

Despite the brawl that took all the attention of the game, the Celtics didn't play a good game overall, so let's see why we lost it:

- Once again rebounding killed us throughout the game. A player called Blatche (sounds familiar doesn't he?) and another one called Evans combined to grab 23 rebounds (12 of those were offensive) and really hurt us in the way that it gave them a lot of second opportunities. As a shocking data, the Celtics only grabbed 8 offensive rebounds whereas the Nets grabbed 17.

- We turned the ball over 17 times during the game and that helped them to score a lof of fast-break points.

- We didn't take care of the three line. The Nets shot with a 41% from 3 and Stackhouse (yes, you heard it OK) hit 5 of his 6 threes.

- Our bench didn't produce and we relied mainly in our starting 5. KG and Bass were the only players  that played a good game while Pierce did struggle shooting 4-13 from 2. Terry didn't play bad and Rondo was ejected (cutting his record of +10 assists to 37 games). About the bench, while Green and Lee both got lightly-injured, the only one that did a correct game was Sullinger who scored 6 points and 3 rebounds but commiting 3 fouls.
But in general, the difference between our bench production and the Nets one was terrific: Our bench scored 18 points while the Nets bench scored a total of 52 points.

After that quick analysis, we've seen that without Rondo we find ourselves lost on the parquet. As I always say, it's very important to have our bench ready to produce, we cannot be depending on our starting 5 all the time because 3 of them have more than 35 years old and need to rest.

Finally, as Greg_Payne has said in his Twitter account, Rondo has been suspended for 2 games, so we won't see him tomorrow against the Blazers.

Many thanks for reading and don't forget to follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/allboutceltics) and on our brand-new Facebook page (facebook.com/itsallaboutCelticsBlog)

LET'S GO CELTICS!!!
